PROVENANCE
Courtesy of the Artist and Zalucky Contemporary, Toronto
Aaron Jones creates images and objects to explore the possibilities in world-building and abstraction. The artist works with different forms of collage, sourcing images from magazines like Essence and O, as well as from educational texts such as encyclopedias on space, nature, and wildlife. He combines excerpts from these disparate sources to build characters and spaces that reflect the nuances of his own upbringing and current life, and act as a pathway toward finding peace. Intimate in scale, his collages are a study in opposing forces which investigate—in part—how Black subjectivity is constructed and the ways in which it might be undone, altered, and made anew. As he recombines material, he builds new images that are surreal, amorphous forms that defy categorization.
Jones has exhibited at national venues including Nuit Blanche and Xpace Cultural Centre (both in Toronto), amongst others. His solo exhibition Open Fist, Closed Palm at Zalucky Contemporary was awarded the Gattuso Prize for “Best Featured Exhibition” during the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival in 2020. In 2021, Jones was commissioned to create a series of collages to debut in Capture’s catalogue. His work is in public and private collections such as Royal Bank of Canada, Ryerson Image Centre, and Wedge Curatorial Projects (all in Toronto). He lives and works in Toronto.
