Dainesha Nugent-Palache explores the dichotomies and paradoxes inherent in representations of Afro-Caribbean femininities. Her practice is concerned with visualizations of Black diasporic cultures across pasts, presents, and speculative futures, producing portraits and still lifes. Porcelain Ponies focuses on her early childhood fascination with the porcelain figurines collected by her mother, exploring the significance of these objects and the reasons why her mother placed them in their home with such consideration and care. To create the ethereal quality of the images, Nugent-Palache uses candlelight, a tungsten strobe head, and a low shutter speed, transporting the viewer from the mundane to the surreal. For the artist, these works demonstrate how objects found throughout the domestic setting of a family home—and in particular, the memories and histories associated with these items—inform our perceptions of our families.
Nugent-Palache’s artwork has been exhibited nationally at venues such as the Pendulum Gallery, Vancouver; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; and Portrait Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, amongst others. Nugent-Palache was the recipient of the New Generation Photography Award and has completed residencies at Nia Centre for the Arts and Whippersnapper Gallery, Toronto. In 2022, Porcelain Ponies was included in Capture’s Featured Exhibition, Family Album. Nugent-Palache is based in Toronto.
