LITERATURE
Linda Sawchyn, Gathie Falk: Visions, Kelowna Art Gallery, 2002, similar painting entitled Apples 21 reproduced page 4
Throughout her career, Gathie Falk has been consistently inspired by everyday life and common objects. From this inspiration, the artist plays with repetitive forms; this work, part of the celebrated Apple Series of the 1990s, is a fine example.
In Apples, we see forms suspended in time and space against a stark black background. Their forms are dynamic – round, sharp, fragmented – and no two shapes are alike. As a master sculptor, the artist’s rendering of the three dimensionality of the painted fruit is exquisite. It brings to mind her well-known “Fruit Piles”, which was first exhibited in 1970 at the Vancouver Art Gallery. A work composed of pyramids of bright apples, oranges and grapefruit made of ceramic, these colourful forms were inspired by an image of a cornerstore fruit market that had captivated the artist.
