Tom Hsu’s practice focuses on the observation of spaces and how bodies exist in them. Using a 35mm camera, Hsu approaches his subjects from odd angles, cropping out the larger scene to focus on specific forms conveying a gentle intimacy. His camera finds everyday, mundane moments and interactions that are often overlooked and gives them a poetic and expressive quality. Back to Ocean is part of a series of photographs taken during the summer months of 2018-2020, evoking memories or fantasies of mid-summer wanderings. Hsu captures the sensation of cold ocean water hitting the bare legs of the young man who looks towards a vast ocean surrounded by the natural landscape of the West Coast.
Hsu lives and works in Vancouver and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver. He has exhibited at Centre A, Libby Leshgold Gallery, Macaulay & Co. Fine Art, Yactac Gallery, (all in Vancouver); and Gallery TPW, Toronto, amongst others. Hsu’s work was part of Capture’s 2021 Public Art program with an installation at the Canada Line hallway at Waterfront Station. He also participated in a residency at Burrard Arts Foundation, Vancouver, culminating in an exhibition.
