Evann Siebens is a multidisciplinary artist who makes media, performance, and photos with movement. Her lens-based practice negotiates the human body as an archival site as well as the politics of the female gaze. Kinda like that Vertigo Poster is from the series Weathering the Erased Gesture, which was shot at Downes Point on Hornby Island. The work is part of a research project alongside the installation Plus TheCo, Minus Helen Goodwin, commissioned by the Belkin Gallery, Vancouver, where videos of contemporary dancers referencing choreographer Helen Goodwin were projected onto a metal geodesic dome. Siebens interviewed and photographed artist Anne Ngan, who was one of Goodwin’s original dancers in the 1960s. Ngan’s gestural movements and their erasure became part of Siebens’s collage process, where the trace of the human figure merges with and is eclipsed by the weathered landscape.
Siebens has exhibited her work at Vancouver Art Gallery Offsite; Kunstinstituut Melly, Rotterdam; Museum of Contemporary Art, Barcelona; and PET Projects, Athens. Her work from A Performance Affair in Brussels, Belgium was featured on the front page of the international edition of The New York Times in 2019. Siebens lives and works in Vancouver.
