PROVENANCE
A gift from the Artist to Margaret Rose Caughill, 1954
By descent to the present Private Collection, Ontario
This work is inscribed on verso with the following text: "Wedding Gift from A.Y. Jackson to Margaret Rose Caughill on the occasion of her wedding to W. Henry, August 14, 1954 Sault Ste. Marie Ont."
This work depicts a cabin which was once located at the mouth of the Michipicoten River in Algoma. Now a Provincial Park, the Michipicoten area was a treasured sketching location for A.Y. Jackson. With friends Harry and Jennie Ross, Jackson acquired a property there; from 1954 to 1966, he spent many summers producing paintings such as this one. Originally a wedding gift from Jackson to Margaret Caughill, Jennie Ross’s sister, it has remained in the family ever since. The family recalls that Jackson presented several of his sketches to Margaret and invited her to select her favourite as a wedding gift. Jackson is said to have been pleased with her selection, as he said it was one of his favorites as well.
