Armand Vaillancourt | Selected Works from the Collection of the Artist
Armand Vaillancourt was born in Black Lake in 1929 and raised on a farm in St-Ferdinand, in a time when everything was done by hand. Vaillancourt arrived in Montreal in 1951, bringing the boundless energy of a pioneer. The artist first entered the public eye in 1953 with his debut public work, L’Arbre de la rue Durocher.

Roll of Life is among the finest examples of Emily Carr’s oil on paper paintings, and holds a special importance her life. This work is related to the iconic painting Swirl and the closely related oil Juice of Life. Roll of Life was painted in the same period—the 1930s, and depicts the same sketching area as these related works—Metchosin, located on the outskirts of Victoria.
