PROVENANCE
The Family of J. W. Beatty
By descent to the Artist's niece, Olive Richards, Ontario
Private Estate, St. Thomas, Ontario
Private Collection, Toronto
During World War I, Beatty was one of the first four official Canadian War Artists appointed by the Canadian War Memorials Fund. The other three were Frederick Varley, Maurice Cullen and Charles Simpson, each of whom were given the rank of captain and full military pay. After some time languishing in the Whitby base near Toronto, Beatty was shipped overseas to France along with Cullen. Often working under German fire, they sketched at the Canadian front, depicting “…the horror, the honour and the humanity of the battlefield...” It is worth noting that the tented field hospital in this panel is very likely the same one depicted in Beatty’s Canadian Hospital Tent sketch, lot 402 in Heffel’s November 26th, 2016 sale.
Please note: this work is on preview at the Design Exchange, Toronto from November 18 - 23, 2017.
