In 1951, Jean McEwen traveled to Paris, where he met Jean Paul Riopelle, who had been there since 1946, and saw Riopelle's solo show at the Studio Paul Fachetti in December of that year. While in Paris, as Constance Naubert-Riser wrote, he became an "amazed witness to the thrashing out of a series of issues formulated in terms that had already emerged from the Paris / New York / Montreal triangle." He proceeded to explore what he was absorbing, and in the fall of 1952, Naubert-Riser noted that he produced a series of canvases using a strong palette of white, red, yellow and blue, vigorously applied with a palette knife.
