Born In 1968, in Wingate, England, Ted Harrison ventured to the quaint town of Carcross, Yukon to pursue teaching, and was immediately stunned by the beauty of the Canadian north. Contrary to Harrison’s formal academic training at the West Hartlepool School of Art, he began to express this newfound affinity through rhythmic blocks of vivid colour, as an ode to the pure vitality of the Yukon landscapes. The mysticism that Harrison acknowledged in his works manifests in Portage to the River. The energetic lines in the distant yet engulfing apricot sky seem to expand across and wrap around the canvas, and conveys a playfulness to the piece, while delicate pinks and purples give life to the stream directly below. Despite the lingering twilight, the children, alongside the curious wildlife in the foreground, do not seem ready to go home. It is as if the deepening evening glow emulated by Harrison’s rich palette does not call for the end of the daily adventures, but rather as a beckoning to wander further into the wonders of the soaring mountain range.
