PROVENANCE
Canadian Art, Joyner / Waddingtons, June 3, 2003, lot 316
Private Collection, Prince Edward Island

Works produced by Group of Seven founding member J.E.H. MacDonald after his return from England in 1907 show the pronounced impact of the artworks he had seen there, particularly those of John Constable. This work and lot 628 in this sale are clear examples of this important influence. The gestural, expressive application of paint, with its focus on light and atmosphere, shows MacDonald exploring a new and modern view of landscape. Centrally, these works encapsulate the artist’s deeply held belief that his immediate surroundings were deserving subjects for his art, and that Canada held a rich beauty worthy of aesthetic celebration. The small oil sketches MacDonald created during these years are of foundational importance to Canadian art. They resulted in his introduction to Lawren Harris, and their subsequent invitation of A.Y. Jackson to Toronto in 1913, setting in motion the events that would give rise to the Group of Seven.
