The rural route of l’Orignal Road would have been located east of Ottawa and Gatineau near the Ottawa River, which serves as a winding boundary line delineating Quebec from Ontario. On the Ontario side of the border, this is a historically francophone region—the word orignal, for example, being French for "moose."

The romantic chill of autumn can be unmistakably sensed in this scene, with its classic A.J. Casson forms and colour choices beneath a subtly evocative overcast sky. The ramshackle rail fence and structures are a key motif in the artist’s work, dating back to his earliest days as a member of the Group of Seven. They speak to the unfailing humanity of his art and his sentiment for the human condition within the beauty of the natural world.
