This verdant on-site oil sketch of a Bermuda landscape by Beaver Hall Group member Prudence Heward overlaps with the lives of two other important artists. It was likely produced by Heward in 1936 while visiting the vacation home of artist Isabel McLaughlin, introduced to her by mutual friend A.Y. Jackson. In a letter to McLaughlin dated February 1, 1930, Jackson describes Heward by saying, “I think she and [Edwin] Holgate are the strongest painters in Montreal.” This connection between Jackson and Heward also explains his inscriptions on verso. Heward, as was the case with many of the female members of Beaver Hall, did not marry, and Jackson took up the role of authenticating this painting left in her estate after her passing in 1947. As evidenced in this strong, modernist arrangement of form and colour, Heward was a crucial artist of her time, beloved and respected by her peers.

The original owners of this painting were Toronto collectors John and Georgia Ridley, one-time owners of F.H. Varley’s major 1936 canvas Liberation, now in the collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario.
