Casson’s paintings are characterised by a remarkable lucidity evident in the interplay of light, colour, and line. The clarity of light in his works serves as a veritable beacon, guiding the viewer’s gaze with exceptional precision and luminosity. Painted circa 1960, Britt from Byng Inlet is no exception. This painting of a small cove in Georgian Bay is carefully composed. The grey sky perfectly mirrors the calm waters of the bay, highlighting the bright houses of the small rural settlement. Casson expertly weaves geometric shapes into both the clouds and the water. This approach is a trademark of Casson’s later works and not only adds depth and dimension but also skillfully directs the viewer’s eye across the surface of the picture.
