The inscription of “SB 6-5” on the verso of this moody and atmospheric on-site watercolour notes that this work was inventoried as the fifth page of the sixth of Jack Bush’s personal sketchbooks. Works from these sketchbooks are rich documents of the artist’s gradual transformation from Group of Seven-style landscape artist to one of the leading abstract artists of his time. They record both intimately observed moments such as this one and his enduring relationship with line and form.

The above essay was provided by Heffel. This work will be included in Dr. Sarah Stanners’s forthcoming Jack Bush Paintings: A Catalogue Raisonné.
