Fifty impressions of this woodcut monotype were produced by David Blackwood for his 1992 exhibition at the newly created Blackwood Gallery, located in the Kaneff Centre at Erindale College, now University of Toronto Mississauga. Proceeds from their sale were then donated by the artist to support the gallery’s programming. The wooden printing block, hand-carved by Blackwood in his central motif of Ephraim Kelloway’s Door, was uniquely inked in various colours by the artist for each printing, producing an edition of 50 monotypes, each numbered 1/1.
The works by David Blackwood in this session comprise some of the most carefully selected examples possible. This meticulously assembled collection was built by collectors who were often given the opportunity to select their impressions in advance of exhibitions, allowing them to choose the strongest, most pristinely printed works. Their selections were then archivally framed, many by the noted Emmett’s Frames of Toronto, maintaining their ideal condition.
