The Nuestra Señora de Atocha was the Admiral Galleon of the Tierra Firme Fleet, a fleet of twenty-eight ships carrying an unprecedented amount of treasure from the Americas. Departing from Havana for Spain on September 4th, 1622, the armada was struck by a massive hurricane in the Florida Keys, which decimated most of the fleet and sent the treasure to the Atlantic seabed.

In 1969, treasure hunter Mel Fisher embarked on a 16-year quest to locate the lost treasure of the Atocha. Over the years, isolated coins and artifacts were found scattered along Florida's "treasure coast", many of which were given to investors who funded the operation. On July 20th, 1985, divers discovered a "reef of bars", constituting the main cargo of the Atocha. This discovery eventually yielded countless artifacts including gold bars, silver coins, and jewellery, with the “Atocha” becoming part of Florida's popular culture and perhaps the most famous shipwreck treasure in history.
