LITERATURE
Pierre Restany, Sorel Etrog, 2001, page 117
Etrog’s career is comprised of clear stylistic periods. Between 1972 and 1979, his work revolved around hinges. Etrog explains, “…After a period of intense colour intoxication with screws and bolts, I was nostalgic for the subtle monochrome patina of the bronzes. At the same time I was searching for a new device for contact and articulation. On a vacation in Israel, visiting my family, I picked up a child’s drawing pad and began to draw doodles of flat and organize surfaces connected by hinges. At first, new ideas feel like illegitimate child of the brain. The hinge stared to obsess me and so I adopted it. Later in Toronto, my wife like, gave me a surprise: a small easel and canvases, with which I set up my own home studio. I felt like a Sunday painter. Through that winter of 1974-75, I made many drawings and small oil paintings of figures, landscapes and heads, all connected by the hinge. In no time the hinge started to dominate my sculpture.”
