LITERATURE
Charles Pachter, interviewed by Heffel, May 2022
In To All In Tents / En Tente Cordiale, Charles Pachter engages with a simplicity of shape and form. The artist’s perennial interest in Canadian history, particularly the biography of John Graves Simcoe (1752 - 1806) and his role in the establishment of Upper Canada, led him to visually explore the subject and meaning of the tent. In this work, Pachter re-engages with the tent as a multifunctional shelter through his use of simplicity in shape and form. The two-toned tent, its primary shapes and composition rendered in symmetry, manifests a geometric and spatial simplification. Pachter explains that “The tent paintings can be seen as reductionist abstractions, ‘canvas houses’ on canvas.”
