Phillip Surrey was a figurative artist with a lasting interest in human interactions. In Café de la madeleine he explores the gregarious yet isolated nature of humanity. The angular setting and architectural structure of the eerie, windowless café, draws the spectator into a sparse, almost secretive space that is challenged by the engaging figure of a women garbed in an aubergine dress. Reminiscent of Edward Hopper’s nostalgia and enigmatic figures, Surrey offers many layers of reality by painting his interpretation of city life.
