David Blackwood’s renowned series The Lost Party was inspired by the harrowing 1914 Sealing Disaster where 132 sealers from the SS Newfoundland were stranded on sub-arctic ice floes for three days without adequate supplies, shelter, or clothing. More than two-thirds of the men were lost. Over the course of this important series, the artist would plumb the existential and philosophical depths of this tragedy to present profound and irreducible moments of the human experience with an unblinking directness.

In this example from the series, the spectral figure rising from the departed sealer is rendered by the artist’s notably fine line work, along with deft aquatint and inking.
