PROVENANCE
Presented to the original owner by the Native Benevolent Association, Prince Rupert, B.C.
By descent to the present Private Collection, Vancouver
This work was commissioned by the Native Benevolent Association and presented to the conisgnor's father as a thank-you for facilitating the construction of a longhouse in Prince Rupert, B.C.
The Native Benevolent Association was initiated by Ken and Margaret Harris of Prince Rupert, B.C.. (Ken was from Gitwangak and Margaret was from Manitoba. They met while serving in the Canadian Armed forces). The NBA was formed to help young Indigenous men in Prince Rupert and the surrounding district find their identity. They were encouraged to explore their respective First Nations cultural values, with an emphasis on story telling, songs and drumming. There was also involvement in various recreational and sports activities.
This work is accompanied by a plaque mounted to argillite.
