Collection of Barrie and Patricia Hale, Ontario
Tom Hodgson, a key member of the Toronto abstractionist group Painters Eleven, created in Untitled a dynamic scene of intertwining figures amongst bursts of colour contrasted with inky black, along with bold diagonal forms. According to the family of collectors Barrie and Patricia Hale, this lively scene makes reference to the camaraderie and vivacious lifestyles of the artists working in Toronto in the 1950s and 1960s. The man on the right is thought to be Toronto artist Gordon Rayner, shown smoking in profile alongside Marlene Markle, the wife and muse of Robert Markle, a member of Toronto's Isaacs Group. The face swirling within the ice cubes in the drinking glass below is thought be Hodgson himself, grinning playfully.
