This handsome Ontario scene by Joachim George Gauthier is a rare large oil painting by the artist. Having attended art school in the United States, when he returned to Toronto he studied under Franklin Carmichael and J.E.H. Macdonald before being employed, along with others associated with the Group of Seven, such as A.J. Casson, as a commercial artist with Sampson Matthews. Highly skilled in the media of both oils and watercolour, Gauthier went on to participate in exhibitions with his fellow members of the Royal Canadian Academy, the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour and the Ontario Society of Artists.
