The subject of this work, Gilbert Desrochers, is one that is very important in Hartman’s practice. Hartman first came across Desrochers’s work in 1980. While driving through a small township in Georgian Bay, Ontario, Hartman noticed one of Desrochers’s angels on the front lawn of the farmhouse of Desrochers’s brother. Hartman began to visit regularly and to document Desrochers’s life and work.
Hartman produced many artworks inspired by Desrochers and his work after their meeting in the 1980s. Hartman guest curated a solo exhibition of Desrochers’s work which was held at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection museum from November 3, 1991 to March 1, 1992, titled The Peaceable Kingdom of Gilbert Desrochers.
Please note: this work is unframed, and the full sheet size is 11 x 15 inches.
