LITERATURE
Charles Pachter, interviewed by Heffel, May 2022
Blue Barn Green Field is an example of Charles Pachter’s depictions of barns on distant hills, recalling structures glimpsed from car windows. He depicts the landscape in cool blue and green tones, as distinguished from the vibrant blue barn structure with a pristine white roof. His blues are complimentary, yet distinct from one another. Pachter is highly conscious of his colour selections, sharing his awareness of the stimulating effects that “pthalo blue, ultramarine, cobalt, and cerulean – mixed with dioxazine violet” create. The curvilinear forms of the simplified landscape setting are contrasted by the barn which is boldly rectilinear. His variations of colour and form gives a sense of geometric and spatial abstraction. Pachter emphasizes his interest in making “the architecture of the barn into an enduring abstract form.” The natural landscape and human-made structure are unified in an abstract realm that exudes serenity.
