LITERATURE
Paul Duval, Canadian Impressionism, 1990, page 44, reproduced page 45, titled as The Great Mosque, Tangiers
Paul Duval wrote, "Cullen's paintings of Tangiers, El Kantara, and Tunis are the most luminous works of his career. He approached his exotic subjects with the direct eye of an Impressionist. He did not identify with Delacroix's romantic lion hunts or Gérôme's gilded courtyards and perfumed seraglios. In paintings like The Great Mosque, Tangier [the title of this work in Duval's book] he is mainly concerned with the impact of light upon the pale architecture, pavement, and costumes."
